Jerry Pergolesi of Contact Contemporary ensemble had expanded the Contact ensemble to a force of 22, conducted by the wonderful Gregory Oh. I saw a number of familiar faces on stage such as Anita McAlister, Ira Zingraff on trumpets, and Mary-Katherine Finch, cello (demanding cello part). I haven't heard such a large sound in such a small live space since a Buffalo church programmed the Mahler Symphony of 1000 in the church nave with the full forces of the BPO & chorus crammed in. It was certainly an assault on the ears. If people went to hear a piece called "Trance", by composer Michael Gordon expecting it to be soft and meditative, they certainly got a wake-up call. It was a compelling piece, wonderfully executed, but I'm still not sure it was the venue for it. I'm still thinking about what I think of a New Music concert that hands out complimentary ear-plugs in the lobby. Do we want to inhabit the territory of rock? Hmmmm. Don't know.
