Liberty Village Bakery To Close

Liberty Village will have a new smell in town.  Canada Bread has announced that it will be closing three plants in Toronto by 2013.  The announcement made, just over a month ago, included the end of the massive and aging bakery located right in Liberty Village.  This desicion is made to make way for a more modern facility that will now reside in Hamilton and will be the largest of its kind in country.  Canada Bread, the company who mainly produces Dempster's products, plans to invest $100 million on the new state-of-the-art bakery by June 2011.

The bakery on Fraser Avenue - visible to traffic on the westbound Gardiner - is quite a bit of a landmark.  Built about 100 years ago, it has been used as a bakery for the past 50 years, filling the neighbourhood with fresh bread aromas.  The closing of the plant will no doubt be the end of a chapter here in Liberty Village history.  Now the question remains: what will the soon-to-be-emptied plant become?
