InLibertyVillage.com and CityEvents hosted round two of Liberty Social Hour last night at Locus 144 on Liberty Street.  Following on the success of their past summer events known as Le Bel Ete, Rod Ponce and Deb Lewis hosted another fabulous event.

This was the first of a two part series, aptly named Noche Caliente.  The soothing ambiance of Locus 144 was the ideal environment for guests to enjoy the warmth of a blazing hot summer’s night - on a cool winter’s evening.  The event was well attended by local business owners and residents, as well as others who travel to the village strictly for its entertainment.

Liberty Village is the new creative hub of Toronto; it is more than living up to the reputation.  The business community is very well connected with each other, which creates a strong sense of community, with vast networks of professionals and artists collaborating together.  It is the perfect environment to share ideas and create valuable relationships with others who live and work in the area.

The guests enjoyed specials on drinks and delicious Tapas style southern Italian home cooked meals.  The DJ music for the networking event easily facilitated comfortable conversation and socializing, followed by the live jazz performance of Sultans of Soul.  The lead singer had a beautiful voice, and gave new interpretations to many old classics, including two very fresh and innovative versions of Summer Time.

To add to the overall aesthetics of the evening, the guests also enjoyed mingling with a group of beautiful young fashion models, preparing for a photo shoot later in the evening.

The next event will be hosted by William’s Landing on Thursday, January 26th.  By that time, we will all be looking forward to another Noche Caliente.

“WORSHIP HAPPY HOUR SAYS MILDRED” reads the specially printed menu for the Liberty Social Hour. Mildred’s Temple Kitchen was the perfect discerning ally for InLibertyVillage.com and CityEvent’s fourth summer socializing and networking event.

Like all post-work, pre-dinner events, Liberty Social Hour’s fourth gathering– this time set at Mildred Temple Kitchen – started slowly. Close-knit groups chose to sit at the bar or scattered on the patio as they sipped their first beverages of the evening. But quite quickly, local residents and workers alike filled the entire patio and lounge, spilling into restaurant seating, and proving the evening to be a huge success.

The warm, sunny evening invited people to take their drinks and food outside. A loosened-up crowd chatted inside as Edward Scissor hands played on a screen in the lounge. It was a warm, welcoming party where new friends were made and new professional connections formed. Regulars of Le Bel Été Social Hour flocked, but there were some new faces too, showing that word has travelled about Social Hour.

The restaurant setting reflects the mood of Liberty Village itself: industrial, stylish, and contemporary. The open-concept restaurant combines the feel of a modern cafeteria with the warmth of a kitchen, its décor featuring wood, steel, and white chairs. Mildred’s Temple Kitchen on Hanna is a top culinary contender in Toronto’s foodie scene, highly acclaimed since its opening in 2008.

The friendly and courteous wait staff rushed around to fill half-price gourmet appetizer orders, the most popular which was the $3 beef slider, a tiny burger so delicious that we asked the waitress if they were just plain ol’ beef, as opposed to sake-fed, massaged Kobe cow. Drink specials included wine, beer, and a delicious classic mojito served in a mason jar.The crowds grew larger and the talking louder as the evening went on, and when 8:30 rolled around, there was no end in sight.

If you don’t want to miss out on the final Social Hour of the summer, come to Liberty Noodle next Thursday, August 18. It starts at 5:30 and “ends” at 8:30.

While walking to the Locus 144 for the Le Bel Été Social Hour I was reminded of the industrial history of this part of the city. Now you're more likely to find an exciting piece of postmodern art instead of an old fashioned-factory as the new residents continue to reinvent this district.

The atmosphere inside Locus 144 was relaxed and cool. Although the sky was threatening rain, that didn't seem to stop a large number of people from stopping by. Once there, people enjoyed a few drinks and some great music, all while appreciating the nature of the event: getting to know a little more about Liberty Village and the people who live there.

It seemed like for every person I spoke to who was a resident of the district there was another person who arrived to check out the scene. It speaks to Liberty Village's reputation as an up-and-coming neighbourhood in Toronto that makes Le Bel Été an event worth travelling for. The feeling seemed to be that the secluded feel of the area created a small town atmosphere, a real shock in a location that's relatively close to the downtown core of one of the largest cities in North America.

The layout for Locus 144 was an open-concept floor plan, with a few tables for intimate conversations if people desired.  Most chose to take advantage of the open space and stood mingling in large groups. It was a comfortable fit for the large group without ever really feeling crowded, something usually not found in similar venues. Everyone I talked to seemed to appreciate the more social atmosphere.

My hands are stained with purple and blue chalk, and I’m pretty sure I have a sunburn, but the invitations were all handed out and the sidewalks neatly chalked – save for the last two where David and I succumbed to the heat and our own exhaustion and half-assed it.  It’s time for the weekly Liberty Social Hour!

Put on by Mercado News, Bhive, and Cityevents, the Liberty Social Hour runs each Thursday at varying venues until August 9, and was organized as a means for businesses and residents in the Liberty Village area to really get to know one another. This week it was at Merci Mon Ami, a small pub that holds about 60 people including the patio. The idea, according to organizer Rod Ponce, is to move the events to slightly bigger venues each time and gain recurring guests as well as newcomers.

Ponce hopes that the weekly occurrence of the Liberty Social Hour, different from most one-time social-networking events, will give local businesses and residents a chance to really get to know each other and communicate.

The evening started off slow at 5:30, with a few early birds quietly nibbling at the pulled pork sandwiches and coleslaw that the staff at Merci Mon Ami had prepared specially for the event.  The large communal tables inside the pub, designed to encourage conversation among guests, sat empty.  Some were there with friends, but a lot came alone. There was the initial sense of shyness, that coy, shoulder-shrug nature we all assume when were forced off our smartphones and newspapers and confronted with the all-to-scary idea of talking to strangers....but then, cautiously, slowly, it all changed.
